Hummingbird Rescue: Saving a Stranded Baby in Our Backyard!
In our backyard hummingbird nest, we found a baby fell out of the nest and stranded on the ground. My wife quickly stepped in to build a makeshift nest and safely shift the baby! Watch the footage till the end on how the hummingbird mom responded and got her baby back! Every year, hummingbirds return to our backyard to nest and raise their chicks. This season, a mother built her tiny home inside our Arbutus tree, and soon two little chicks hatched. As the days passed, they grew quickly outgrowing their cozy space. One day, we found a chick missing from the nest. At first, we thought it had learned to fly and left, until we looked down and spotted the little one stranded on the ground near an irrigation pipe. We faced a difficult dilemma! should we leave it alone, place it back into the tiny original nest, or build a temporary one? The internet gave conflicting advice, some warned never to touch it, while others suggested creating a safe secondary nest. We were worried whether the mother would reject the chick or fail to feed it in a new spot. With daylight rapidly fading and the ground too dangerous to leave the baby overnight, we had to act. We crafted a makeshift nest using a paper cup lined with soft cotton and dry leaves, gently placed the chick inside, and hung it from a branch of the same tree. As night fell, all we could do was hope the little one would survive until morning. At first light the next morning, we rushed outside and were relieved to find both chicks safe in their separate nests. I quickly set up my camera on a tripod to document what would happen next, eager to see if the mother would accept our handmade nest and care for both babies. Reviewing the footage later that afternoon left us in awe. The mother not only found her lost baby, but she also tirelessly flew back and forth, taking turns feeding each chick in its own nest. One day later, we had rain and to protect the makeshift nest made of paper cup we placed a bigger plastic cup underneath. Over the next few days, both chicks grew stronger under their mom's devoted care. They started practicing little test flights, hovering just above their nests.
